Florida Institute of CPAs Educational Foundation

The Florida Institute of CPAs Educational Foundation (Foundation) was established for nearly 50 years, and had recently employed only one development director, prior to Jason Zaborske and Capital Events, Inc. (CE) taking over the reigns as the lead development director in 2006. The Foundation had a total of one endowment to date, and the board was not a fully engaged in fundraising efforts at the time. The Foundation had an operating budget of less than $150,000 and organized two sporting events as their main source of funds at the time – a run/walk on tax day, and a summer golf tournament. CE was employed to fully staff and supervise all board activities and fundraising for special events for the Foundation, and to increase the number of endowments and overall awareness of their scholarship programs, as well as their membership benefits and overall promotions.

Solutions:

CE developed new ways to give to the Foundation including redesigning their sponsorship brochures and membership benefits packages. CE employed targeted fundraising strategies and developed promotional materials such as newsletters, emails, magazine articles, flyers, and other print/web based documents. CE has increased donor options and "Ways to Give" to the Foundation and has updated the website with online giving methods and payments allowing us to modernize the Foundation and appeal to wide range of donors. Capital Events empowered board members by implementing a new committee structure designed to increase board participation and streamline face-to-face meetings and fundraising outreach. Increased committee communication led to a more successful and efficient Foundation, and the addition 12 new endowments each ranging from $25,000 to $400,000 since 2008.

Results:

Capital Events has developed the Foundation into a thriving and modern education Foundation, which is now recognized as the national leader of Foundations as they relate to CPA societies. Capital Events secured a $1 million challenge grant from the Wallace H. Coulter foundation, and matched it in 2 years. We have also secured $500,000 in permanent endowments and grown endowments from two $25,000 endowments to more than twelve $25,000 endowments to provide scholarships to deserving accounting students. We successfully raised net revenues for all foundation events including the annual 5k run/walk, golf tournament, and developed new fundraising events including a family retreat, and jeans for scholarships, which have raised awareness and increased scholarship funds.
